Hawaii is not one single island. It is an island chain, and the four islands most travelers visit are Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai.
You can have a wonderful vacation without ever leaving Oahu, home to Honolulu and Waikiki. But if you have an extra day or two, adding another island can make your trip even more memorable. Although the islands share the same Hawaiian culture, each one has its own scenery, atmosphere, and personality.
One mistake travelers sometimes make is assuming that the islands are close enough to reach by car. There are no bridges connecting the major Hawaiian Islands, and there is no regular passenger ferry that allows visitors to take a rental car from Oahu to the Big Island, Maui, or Kauai.
For most travelers, interisland flights are the only practical way to move between the major islands.
The Flights Are Short, but the Journey Takes Time
Flights from Honolulu to the neighboring islands generally take less than an hour.
- Honolulu (HNL) to Hilo (ITO): approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour
- Honolulu (HNL) to Kona (KOA): approximately 50 minutes
- Honolulu (HNL) to Maui (OGG): approximately 40 to 50 minutes
- Honolulu (HNL) to Kauai (LIH): approximately 40 minutes
On paper, these flights look very quick. In reality, changing islands takes much longer once you include transportation to the airport, check-in, security screening, baggage claim, and rental-car pickup.
Depending on your schedule, moving from one island to another can take up a large part of the day. When planning your trip, count the time from the moment you leave your hotel until you are actually ready to begin sightseeing on the next island.
Personally, I would not recommend trying to visit Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai during a five- or six-day vacation. You may end up spending more time in airports than enjoying the islands, and the constant packing and unpacking can become exhausting.
For a first trip to Hawaii, using Oahu as your base and adding the one neighboring island that interests you most usually makes for a better vacation.
On the Big Island, Choose Between Hilo and Kona First
The Big Island has two airports commonly used by visitors: Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east side and Kona International Airport (KOA) on the west side.
If Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the main reason for your visit, Hilo is usually the more convenient airport. From Hilo, you can combine the national park with attractions such as Kilauea overlooks, the Steam Vents, Rainbow Falls, and Liliuokalani Gardens.
With an early flight from Honolulu, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and several Hilo-area attractions before returning to Oahu on an evening flight.
Keep in mind that visiting the national park does not guarantee a view of glowing red lava. Volcanic activity is a natural event and changes from day to day. Think of the park instead as a chance to walk through dramatic volcanic landscapes and see how the Hawaiian Islands continue to evolve.
If your plans are centered around Kona, Waikoloa resorts, coffee farms, or manta ray activities, Kona International Airport will be the better choice.
The Big Island is approximately 6.7 times larger than Oahu. If you want to explore both Hilo and Kona properly, plan on staying at least one night. If your priority is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Hilo area, however, a day trip from Oahu can still be a very rewarding experience.
On Maui, It Helps to Keep the Itinerary Simple
Maui’s main airport is Kahului Airport (OGG), about a 40- to 50-minute flight from Honolulu.
The island is known for Haleakala National Park, the Road to Hana, Iao Valley, and the resort areas of Wailea and Kaanapali.
The map may make it look as though you can cover several major attractions in one day, but driving times on Maui can be surprisingly long. The Road to Hana, in particular, is not simply a drive to one destination. The experience is the journey itself: winding coastal roads, waterfalls, rainforest scenery, overlooks, and small communities along the way.
I would not recommend trying to combine the full Road to Hana experience with Haleakala in a single day. For a Maui day trip, choose one part of the island and build the itinerary around it. If you want to drive the Road to Hana at a relaxed pace or spend time enjoying Maui’s resorts, staying at least one night will be much more comfortable.
Kauai Works Surprisingly Well as a Day Trip
Kauai’s main airport is Lihue Airport (LIH), approximately a 40-minute flight from Honolulu.
Some of the island’s best-known sights include Waimea Canyon, Kalalau Lookout, Kokee State Park, Spouting Horn, and Poipu.
You can take an early flight from Oahu, tour Waimea Canyon and Kauai’s south side, and return to Honolulu in the evening. For travelers who want to experience one of Hawaii’s most dramatic landscapes without changing hotels, Kauai can be a very satisfying island day trip.
Waimea Canyon is on the western side of Kauai, while Hanalei and the North Shore are in the opposite direction. Trying to cover both areas in one day usually means spending too much time in the vehicle. For a day trip, focus either on Waimea Canyon and the South Shore or on Hanalei and the North Shore.
The Na Pali Coast is another important consideration. You cannot drive along the entire coastline. The most memorable ways to experience it are by boat, helicopter, or selected hiking trails.
How to Book Interisland Flights in Hawaii
Hawaiian Airlines operates the majority of interisland flights between Honolulu and Hilo, Kona, Maui, and Kauai. Hawaiian is now part of Alaska Air Group, but interisland flights are still sold and operated under the Hawaiian Airlines name. Southwest Airlines serves the same routes.
Departures are frequent, but schedules and fares vary by date and season.
Some nonstop flights also operate between neighboring islands, such as Maui and the Big Island. However, schedules may be limited, and a connection through Honolulu may sometimes be necessary.
If you plan to visit several islands, check the available flights before booking your hotels. This matters most for a same-day island trip. The cheapest airfare is not always the best choice if it leaves you with only a few hours to enjoy your destination.
Travel to smaller islands such as Lanai and Molokai is handled mainly by Mokulele Airlines, which flies small commuter aircraft. These flights operate less frequently, have fewer seats, and may have different baggage restrictions. Confirm your transportation first, then arrange your accommodations and activities.
Because interisland routes and operating schedules can change, always verify the current flight options before finalizing your itinerary.
Arrive Two Hours Early, Even for an Interisland Flight
A 40-minute flight may feel more like a short commute than a regular flight, but Hawaii’s interisland airports can still be busy.
These flights are used not only by visitors but also by local residents traveling between islands for work, family, medical appointments, and everyday business. Honolulu’s airport handles international, mainland, and interisland travelers, so check-in counters and security lines can become crowded.
Except for very early departures when the airport is generally quieter, I recommend arriving about two hours before an interisland flight.
Allow even more time if you need to return a rental car. Locating the return area, completing the return, waiting for a shuttle, reaching the terminal, and checking baggage can take longer than expected.
Honolulu’s airport is also quite spread out. Depending on your terminal and departure gate, you may have a considerable walk after passing through security.
Check In Online 24 Hours Before Departure
Most airlines allow online or mobile check-in beginning approximately 24 hours before departure.
Use the information from your e-ticket to complete check-in and save your mobile boarding pass in advance. This can save valuable time at the airport.
If you do not have checked baggage, you may be able to go directly to security. If you are checking a suitcase, you will still need to use the airline’s bag-drop counter or kiosk, even if you have already checked in online.
Save your boarding pass to your phone or take a screenshot as well. That way you will still have access to it if the airport Wi-Fi is slow or the airline app does not open when you need it.
For a Day Trip, Flight Times Matter More Than Price
If you are visiting the Big Island or Kauai from Oahu for the day, choose an early morning departure and an evening return whenever possible.
A slightly cheaper late-morning flight may not be a bargain once you realize how much sightseeing time you lose. By the time you arrive, collect your belongings, and pick up a rental car or meet your guide, it may already be close to lunchtime.
A typical Big Island day trip begins with a morning flight from Honolulu to Hilo, followed by a tour of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Hilo area, and an evening flight back to Oahu.
A Kauai day trip generally follows a similar pattern: fly to Lihue in the morning, visit Waimea Canyon and other selected attractions, and return to Honolulu that evening.
When possible, avoid building the entire day around the last flight home. Interisland flights can be delayed or canceled because of weather, aircraft availability, or operational changes.
Allow plenty of time if you plan to connect to an international or mainland flight after returning to Oahu. If the tickets were purchased separately and your interisland flight is delayed, the long-haul airline may not protect your onward reservation.
Rental Cars Must Be Booked Separately on Each Island
You cannot take an Oahu rental car with you to the Big Island, Maui, or Kauai.
If you are using a rental car on Oahu and then traveling to the Big Island, you must return the Oahu vehicle, fly from Honolulu, and pick up a different rental car after arriving on the Big Island.
The same rule applies when traveling to Maui or Kauai. If you plan to drive on several islands, you will need a separate rental-car reservation for each island.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to choose your own route, stop whenever you like, and spend more time in places that interest you. On the other hand, you will be responsible for driving, navigation, parking, and repeating the pickup and return process whenever you change islands.
When comparing rental-car rates, remember to include taxes, insurance, airport fees, fuel, and hotel parking. Parking charges at some Hawaii resorts can add a significant amount to the total cost.
Exploring Another Island Without a Rental Car
A rental car is not the only way to explore Hawaii’s neighboring islands.
If you would rather not drive, you can combine an interisland flight with a locally guided day tour.
You can keep your hotel on Oahu, take a morning flight to another island, meet your guide at the destination airport, tour the island’s major attractions, and return to Honolulu that evening.
The biggest advantage is convenience. You do not need to change hotels, repack your luggage, find unfamiliar roads, or worry about parking. You can also learn about the island’s history, culture, and natural landmarks while traveling with a local guide.
Of course, a guided tour follows a set schedule, so it does not offer quite as much freedom as renting a car. But if you have limited time, prefer not to spend the day driving, or are visiting the island for the first time, it can be a much easier way to see the highlights.
Even if you stay overnight on a neighboring island, you can still use guided tours that provide pickup from selected hotels. You also do not have to choose only one travel style. Some travelers rent a car for a portion of their stay and book a guided tour for a day that involves long-distance driving.
Is a Day Trip or an Overnight Stay Better?
There is no single right answer. It depends on what you want from the trip.
A day trip works well if you want to keep your Oahu hotel and visit a neighboring island’s signature attractions without moving your luggage. It can be an efficient way to see Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island or Waimea Canyon on Kauai.
An overnight stay is the better choice if you want to explore both Hilo and Kona, drive the Road to Hana at an unhurried pace, combine sightseeing with resort time, or visit several regions of one island.
A simple way to decide: take a Big Island day trip if Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Hilo area are your priorities, or a Kauai day trip if you want Waimea Canyon and the South Shore. Rent a car if flexibility and independent exploration matter most. Stay overnight if you want to combine sightseeing with relaxation or explore several parts of one island. And choose a guided day tour if you would rather not drive but still want to see the major sights efficiently.
Personally, I think a guided tour can be a great introduction to an island you have never visited. You can see the highlights with a local guide and then return for a longer, slower stay on a future trip.
Start With What You Most Want to Experience
A memorable Hawaii vacation is not about visiting the greatest number of islands. It is about choosing the experiences that matter most to you.
- Choose Oahu for Waikiki, shopping, restaurants, golf, beaches, and a wide variety of activities.
- Choose the Big Island for volcanoes, black-sand beaches, and Hawaii’s vast, dramatic landscapes.
- Choose Maui for Haleakala, scenic coastal drives, and a relaxed resort experience.
- Choose Kauai for Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, and some of Hawaii’s most rugged natural scenery.
Once you have chosen the island that best fits your interests, plan your flights first, followed by accommodations, a rental car, or guided tours. That order usually makes the rest of the itinerary much easier to arrange.
